Robert Musil was born in Klagenfurt, Austria. After graduating from cadet school, he entered the Higher Technical School in Stuttgart, then studied philosophy, psychology and mathematics at the University of Berlin. From 1924, Musil worked almost continuously, until the end of his life, on the greatest novel of the twentieth century, “The Man Without Qualities.” Musil's skill, combining phenomenal erudition, extraordinary analytical abilities and a rare gift of writing, remains unsurpassed. The main character of the novel, Ulrich, faced with the “incredible loneliness of man in the desert of trifles,” tries to isolate himself from the splendor and poverty of the outside world with the help of his Self.
