Work on the Arbat trilogy, which Rybakov considered the main work of his life, began in the mid-1950s. “A mighty, powerful, Shakespearean thing,” L. Annensky said about “Children of the Arbat” at a meeting of the editorial board of the magazine “Friendship of Peoples” in 1987, when it was finally decided to publish the novel, which had lain on the table for more than twenty years and become a symbol the beginning of a new era in Russian history.
