“Germanic Mythology” is a fundamental study on the historical worldview of the continental Germans and written by Jacob Grimm (1785-1863), one of the greatest linguists of the 19th century, the eldest of the Grimm brothers. The book had a comprehensive influence on a whole generation of scientists and became a source of inspiration for philologists and ethnographers around the world (including Russian scientists). Together with Germanic Mythology, a new methodological school was established in folkloristics, working with myth as a living part of the language, the core of an enduring folk tradition. In many respects, Grimm's work remains an unsurpassed standard: in particular, it is the most comprehensive source work on the topic. This edition presents the first translation of "Germanic Mythology" into Russian | the translation was made according to the most complete, fourth, edition of the book (completed in 1878) without cuts and abbreviations. The translation resolves the main difficulties that the modern reader of the original "Germanic Mythology" faces | all citations contained in the book are fully translated in different languages, ancient and new, the text is provided with a list of references and comments. Multilingual cited material makes up at least a third of the entire book and has not been translated either by the author or in modern reprints. As for literature, Grimm refers to hundreds of sources, many of which are rare and obscure. references, however, according to the tradition of the 19th century, are given by the author in abbreviations and are transcribed in this edition for the first time. Thus, the first ever academic edition of Germanic Mythology is published in Russian, which includes all the necessary reference apparatus. 2nd edition, revised.
