The most ambitious work of George Eliot (the pseudonym of the English writer Mary Ann Evans), a real masterpiece, was the novel “Middlemarch” about a provincial town. A lot of terrible things are happening in Middlemarch - dubious enrichment, feuds over inheritance, intrigues, unsuccessful marriages, but the novel is written with gentle irony and imbued with typical Victorian optimism.
