The Germans defended Breslau from the Red Army since the winter of 1945, capitulating only on May 6. In these dramatic circumstances, an investigation is underway into the mysterious deaths of people associated with the removal of works of art from the city. The main characters, Abwehr officer (Oxford graduate and pacifist) Schilke and a mysterious individual named Holmes, are trying not only to survive the war, but also to ensure a better life for themselves after the war.
