Being a Magid is very difficult. You, of course, have a lot of magical abilities, and you know a lot of things - including the so-called terrible secrets. But in the world entrusted to you, anything can happen, and then there will be no trouble. Rupert Venables is a junior Magid of the Earth and, by tradition, is in charge of affairs in the empire of Koryphos. Business trips to the empire are Rupert’s least favorite - you never know what the authorities there will throw out. And now: the emperor first executed his eldest son, and then he himself died during a mysterious explosion in the palace. Now the Magid has to find the heir - that’s quite a task: after all, all the numerous children of the emperor are hidden in an unknown place and do not know about their origins. In addition, as luck would have it, Rupert is given a responsible mission: to choose a new Magid from the list of candidates. Poor Rupert is torn between Earth and the Empire, only vaguely realizing that all this confusion is part of Predestination.
