“Travels with Auntie” is an eccentric biography of a lady of easy virtue, who in her old age retained her cheerful disposition and penchant for adventure. For the former bank manager Mr. Henry Pulling, on whose behalf the story is told, a meeting with Aunt Augusta - the sister of his adoptive mother - means the end of his former calm, routine, well-intentioned life. This, by the author’s own definition, “serious” novel is full of comic situations, irony and grotesquerie. Graham Greene opens up to the reader from a new, unknown side.

An interesting episode: after reading the manuscript of the novel “Travels with My Aunt,” the publisher, for commercial reasons, suggested changing the title. In response, a laconic telegram came from the author: “It’s easier to change the publisher than the name.”
