The novel “The Wrath of Dionysus” was recognized as the most widely read book in the 1910s. Written as an artist’s diary, it tells the story of a young woman who travels from St. Petersburg to the Caucasus to meet the family of her beloved husband. An affair that begins on the road with a random fellow traveler forces the heroine to choose between her old love and passion for a new acquaintance.* * *Having emigrated in 1917, she never returned to Russia. Her works were not republished, her name was practically not mentioned - this is how an unwanted author was erased from Russian literature. But time puts everything in its place, and the works of one of the most popular writers of the early 20th century return to readers. So, Evdokia Nagrodskaya (1866–1930)… like A. Verbitskaya, Sanzhar, T. Krasnopolskaya, she gained fame as a feminist writer. Already her first novel, “The Wrath of Dionysus,” brought Nagrodskaya notoriety, and in a short time went through ten editions. The so-called issues of “gender” in a free marriage, “the liberation of a woman from the yoke of a man,” and the mysteries of the mysterious female soul became the main themes in her work. The writer not only lifts the curtain on what traditional literature has been bashfully silent about, she defends her right to talk about intimate things boldly and openly. And it is not surprising that Nagrodskaya’s appeal to the depths of female nature is in tune with the consciousness of a modern woman.
