Shusaku Endo, whom critics called “the Japanese Graham Greene” and Graham Greene himself called one of the best writers of the 20th century, is an outstanding novelist and playwright, a classic of Japanese literature. His debut book, White Man, won the Akutagawa Prize; after her, the novel “The Sea and the Poison” brought the writer wide fame and was filmed (the “Silver Bear” prize at the Berlin Film Festival), “Samurai” and “Silence” became world bestsellers. In the novel “Scandal” Endo masterfully exposes the darkest and incomprehensible sides of humanity souls. The main character, the venerable Christian writer Suguro, learns that a certain person who looks exactly like him is visiting the hot spots of Tokyo under his name. This threatens his literary reputation, especially since tabloid reporter Kobari takes on the investigation of the scandalous story. Deciding to meet the impostor face to face, Suguro rushes into the world of peep shows and sadomasochistic clubs.
