Fulcheria's “Jerusalem History” is the main source telling about the First Crusade. The author of this work, the French priest Fulcher, was part of the retinue of one of the leaders of the crusaders - Baldwin of Boulogne, brother of Godfrey of Boulogne. From the first days, Fulcher found himself in the very center of events: together with Baldwin, he took part in an expedition to Edessa and witnessed the founding of the County of Edessa, the first of the Crusader states. When Baldwin became the head of the newly formed Kingdom of Jerusalem, Fulcher, his confessor, found himself at the very heights of power, becoming a participant in and witness to the events that followed the First Crusade. An insightful and subtle thinker, Fulcher sets out in detail the history of the formation of the crusader states in the Holy Land up to the 20s of the 12th century. In “The Jerusalem Story,” the author managed to vividly depict the feelings of Western Europeans who for the first time encountered the Middle Eastern world, previously known to them only from the stories of pilgrims.
