“In the Recesses of Memory” is a fascinating story about the search for the mysterious author of the novel “The Labyrinth of Inhumanity,” which caused a storm of emotions in Paris in 1938: some called him the new Arthur Rimbaud, others accused him of plagiarism. Nowadays, the book makes an indelible impression on the aspiring Senegalese writer Diegan Latir Faye, and he sets out to find out what happened to this man who disappeared without a trace. A mental journey into the past and a real one - in the footsteps of the author - immerses Diegan in the details of long-standing dramatic events of the colonial era, the First World War, the Holocaust... The novel is a mixture of several genres: it is an intellectual detective story, a coming-of-age story, a love story, a reportage, a philosophical essay , biography, political pamphlet. It touches on fundamental questions about the connection between creativity and life, about the difficult relations between African and Western countries. But first of all, it is a hymn to the love of literature and glorification of its inexhaustible power.
