The treatise of the outstanding Taoist philosopher, alchemist, physician and historian Ge Hong “Baopu Tzu”, written around 320 AD. e., is a kind of encyclopedia of early medieval Taoism. The doctrine of the Tao-Way of the universe and the ways of acquiring it, alchemy and magic, medicine and astrology, the doctrine of immortal celestials and recipes for making the elixir of eternal life are just some of the topics discussed in detail by Ge Hong in his “alchemical apocalypse,” as the great Russian sinologist Academician V. M. Alekseev called the treatise “Baopu Tzu.” Ge Hong’s treatise has long attracted the attention of domestic researchers. Back in the 20s, the outstanding sinologist Yu. K. Shchutsky began working on it, but his work was not destined to be completed. And only now the Russian reader gets the opportunity to get acquainted with this amazing text, which intertwines descriptions of magic mushrooms and discussions of Taoism and Confucianism, recipes for the transmutation of metals and fascinating short stories about immortals, philosophical reflections and recommendations on breathing practice and sexual hygiene. The translation is of considerable interest. for orientalists, cultural studies, religious studies, historians of science, doctors and everyone interested in the spiritual culture of China. The first complete translation of the treatise “Baopu Tzu” into Russian was made by E.A. Torchinov.
