On October 13, 1972, a small plane with a team of young rugby players on board veered off course and crashed into the mountains. Of the forty-five passengers and crew, sixteen survived. For ten grueling weeks they fought for survival in the snow-covered Andes without warm clothing, without food or water, without means of communication, confronted the harsh nature and tried to get out to people. They suffered the most difficult trials. From the category of those that expose human nature and reveal its essence. In some, savagery and brutality awaken, in others, on the contrary, exceptional heroism and self-sacrifice. Pierce Paul Reed worked meticulously and very carefully. For several months he collected materials for the book, surveyed and interviewed survivors, their relatives and friends, and verified facts. He did everything to establish the truth and tell the world the story of unfortunate people forced to feed on their dead comrades in order to survive.
