Breton tales about King Arthur, the knights of the Round Table and the search for the Holy Grail and the French chivalric novels created on their basis are almost unknown to the Russian reader, although they are much older, more complete and diverse than the English version of Arthuriana known to us. The translation is based on the publication of the famous medievalist of the 19th century, curator of the manuscripts department of the French National Library, Prof. P. Parisa: “The Novels of the Round Table, translated into modern language by Paulin Parisa and accompanied by studies of the origins and characteristics of these great works.” The book includes four works that clearly show how the genre of the secular novel gradually grows out of the biblical apocrypha. This is a prose adaptation of Robert de Boron’s novel “Joseph of Arimathea” (late 12th century), an even earlier legend “The Discovery of the Book of the Grail”, the novel “The Holy Grail” (one of the first examples of the European “framed story”) and a completely classic chivalric novel “King Arthur”. The publication is intended for a wide range of readers interested in the history of literature, religion and European culture.
