This was a real shock for the entire Moscow nobility. The modest and seemingly inconspicuous second tsar of the Romanov dynasty, Alexei Mikhailovich (The Quietest), suddenly lost confidence in the once beloved Patriarch Nikon. For what? What did the patriarch do to the king? Is it only because Nikon declared terror on the schismatic Old Believers who were baptized in the old fashion with two fingers? An ominous silence hung over the state. It seemed that even nature froze in anticipation. Will Tsar forgive Nikon and return him to the patriarchal throne again? Or will he be sent into exile? The novel highlights the significant historical events of the reign of the second tsar from the Romanov dynasty, Alexei Mikhailovich the Quiet, from the discovery of the relics of St. Savva of Storozhevsky and the first “Smolensk challenge” to royal Poland, to his premature death at just 46 years old. A special place in The novel is occupied by the challenges of the Quiet Tsar in the internal politics of the state in his relationships with his closest subjects: favorites Morozov, Matveev, diplomats and governors, which allowed the Tsar to avoid plunging into the abyss of a new Time of Troubles with failures in domestic and foreign policy and the still terrifying church schism.
