In this collection of essays, writer, critic, poet, and artist John Burger (1926–2017) discusses the horrors of modern war, terrorism, and the nature of overwhelming despair. On the pages of the book, he shows us the lives of people for whom this feeling has become a faithful companion - the poor and refugees from Afghanistan, Palestine, Iraq, Syria - and invites us to share their mourning for freedom taken away by force. Drawing on the films of Paolo Pasolini, the work of Francis Bacon, the photographs of Ahlam Shibli and Jitka Hanzlova, and recalling Susan Sontag's "Beholding the Suffering of Others," Burger examines how art, as a tool of resistance to oppressive policies, can help triumph over pain, fear and hatred. The publishing layout of the book is saved in PDF A4 format.
