Having received the support of US President F.D. Roosevelt, S.E. Morison had access to any information, collected unique material and, on its basis, created a fundamental fifteen-volume work. This volume is dedicated to the battle for the island of Guadalcanal - one of the key ones in the war in the Pacific. Along with the battles of Stalingrad and El Alamein, the naval campaign on Guadalcanal (August 1942 - February 1943), this island forgotten by God and people, can be called the turning point of the Second World War - a kind of Verdun of the Pacific Ocean.
