Nikolai Fedorovich Gamaleya is one of the largest microbiologists and epidemiologists, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1939), honorary academician (1940), academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (1945), founder of the Bacteriological Institute in Odessa, founder of microbiology as a science, he life fought against epidemics. A strange and funny Odessa resident with pince-nez and a beard least of all resembled a desperate hero and a fan of science, however, it was thanks to his unshakable faith in science that he managed to defeat epidemics of plague and cholera. Having mastered Pasteur’s method of vaccination, he, together with Ilya Mechnikov, became study and develop the science of viruses. He was the first to develop a vaccine against rabies, which he decided to test on himself, then developed a vaccine against cholera, successfully fought another outbreak of plague in Odessa and became a real legend of virology.
