Post-war Yaroslavl is restless. At a local general store, a saleswoman and a customer who was there were killed. A little earlier, an elderly man was brutally stabbed to death, whose headless corpse was thrown into a cesspool by the killers. To stop the bloody lawlessness, operatives introduce the criminal lieutenant Ilya Zhuravlev into the gang. He manages to gain the confidence of the leader and finds out that a robbery of a railway carriage with expensive furs is being prepared in the near future.
