Doctors diagnose 26-year-old Emil with a disease that leads to gradual memory loss - early-onset Alzheimer's. He is promised two years to live and is asked to remain in the hospital under observation. But he refuses. Instead of being a burden to his family, the young man secretly buys an old camping car and, without much hope, advertises on the Internet, inviting a fellow traveler to share the last trip of his life with him. To his amazement, such a person is quickly found. This is Joanna, she is 29. Emil meets her, in a large black hat, fragile and indifferent to everything, in a parking lot near the motorway. The two of them travel to the Pyrenees. Periodic calls to the girl’s mobile phone and her conversations on the phone intrigue Emil, who begins to think that her fellow traveler is hiding some secret. Nevertheless, Joanna’s bold decision is to accompany a young man about whom she knows nothing except his state of health. As a result, it gives the two of them not only beautiful landscapes, but also unexpected discoveries. Through pain and fear, the characters go through the difficult path of saying goodbye to each other and at the same time finding themselves.
The writer Melissa da Costa managed to create a story that is achingly sad and stunningly beautiful at the same time, in which an obvious separation can become a new hope. And the writer was able to feel so deeply and accurately convey the inner world of a person slowly losing his memory thanks to her personal experience of helping people diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
