Perov's later work is usually characterized as a period of searching, in which the artist, as a rule, fails. Meanwhile, now that the entire path of development of painting in the second half of the 19th century has been outlined, it becomes obvious that Perov had amazing intuition or simply the mind of a person who could predict, calculate or, as they say now, model at the level of a plot program the most promising, interesting in artistic tasks that do not repeat “passed” creative tasks. His “failures” clearly mark milestones on the path along which painting really moved in the 1870s - 1890s. Thus, Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane is an anticipation of Ge's later paintings, Yaroslavna's Lament and sketches of the Snow Maiden - compositions by Viktor Vasnetsov.
