It is difficult for a modern person to discern the amazing opportunities that the patristic texts open up for us: “learning to pray from the Lord,” that is, praying as the people of the Bible and our fathers prayed by faith, means not only mastering certain texts, but also all methods, forms, gestures with the help of which prayer acquires its appropriate expression. Whoever wants to be in communion with the Father can come to Him only along the “path” of the Son, which was paved, and they themselves became a living part of it, all those fathers in faith who “walked correctly before us.” Deep personal experience of prayer and serious knowledge of the works of the holy fathers make the book of Schema-Archimandrite Gabriel a valuable help to all who have embarked on this path.
