Igor Severyanin entered literature at the beginning of the 20th century, uniquely and vividly expressing the contradictions of his time, its hopes and disappointments. He gained unprecedented fame as the King of Poets, and later experienced the immense bitterness of an exile. He entered the consciousness of many as a “poet of ecstasy, caprice”, “an unknown clown”, who exclaimed: “I will transform the tragedy of life into a dream-farce.” The complexity of the poet’s worldview and his true skill were obscured by the shocking mask of an indifferent genius, a “lyrical ironist.” “The real, fresh, childish talent” noted by Alexander Blok in Severyanin was first revealed to readers in 1913, with the publication of the book “The Thunder-Boiling Cup.” “It’s rare to see,” wrote one of the publishers of Severyanin’s books, V.V. Pashukanis, “for a poet to receive such completely unusual attention as Igor Severyanin received from the most diverse circles of the reading public.”
