“Explanation of the Psalms” continues the series of exegetical writings by Blessed Theodoret of Cyrus on the books of the Old Testament. In this work, the author, who explains all the poems in a row, manages to avoid the extremes of both allegorical and typological methods. Rev. Maxim the Greek greatly appreciated these interpretations of the bl. Theodoret for simplicity of presentation and accessibility to understanding. As in other books in the series “Creations of the Holy Fathers and Teachers of the Church,” all biblical quotations have been re-verified according to Church Slavonic and, where necessary, according to Greek texts. Columns according to the publication of J.–P. are indicated in square brackets. Minya. In this electronic version of the book, in square brackets, in italics, there is a translation of the psalms into Russian made by Professor P. A. Yungerov (from the Greek text LXX).* * * * There is a book with the help of which a person can completely change his life. Because God’s help to those who read the Psalter is great. In the words of St. John Chrysostom, if a person has fallen into temptation, he will draw abundant consolation from this book. If you suddenly sinned, then the recipes for thousands of medicines ready for this case are already written down in it. If poverty or any other trouble comes, this great book will point to many havens. Even the greatest righteous people derive great benefit from it. What can we say about sinners who can change in one moment by reading just one psalm. But the Psalter is allegorical. Even very careful reading does not allow a person without a theological education to fully understand the truths contained in it. Therefore, it is useful to read the explanations of the psalms of the holy fathers of the Church. One of the most understandable and simple to present is the explanation of Blessed Theodoret of Cyrus. The Psalter with the interpretations of this theologian is considered a monument of Sacred Tradition. The explanations were written in the 5th century, but even today the reader is attracted by the vividness of the author’s style, brevity and at the same time the deepest penetration into the meaning of sacred words.
