“Harmony is my middle name” is the tenth novel by Anatoly Andreev. His hero is a writer with a philosophical mindset, German Romanov, who accepts the eternal challenge of a person to himself: to know himself, while achieving non-illusory harmony in his relationship with himself and the world. In the work, the main thing is not the historical events of the last thirty years (they are demonstratively given in the background), but the history of the human soul, the history of self-knowledge; the social in a person’s life gives way to the spiritual, which is emphasized by the polemical genre definition of the novel: the novel is not for everyone. To a certain extent, this is a philological research novel. The internal intrigue of the work (which is reflected in its structure) is a polemic with Dostoevsky and, more broadly, a polemic with the most popular cultural myths. Love, death, creativity, loneliness, small and great aspects of human nature - all this is melted in the novel into a kind of “substance of harmony.” The text contains many paradoxical combinations of situations that give the most serious things a bitterly ironic shade. Great doubts become a tool of cognition, and cognition becomes a tool for finding harmony. The cross-cutting theme of A. Andreev’s works is knowledge and love. The feeling that the heroes experience is cosmic in nature. That is why men and women live in the city of Minsk, located on planet Earth, which is a piece of the Universe.
