The collection includes the works of the holy hesychast fathers—the silent ones who performed the mental Jesus Prayer in seclusion. The works reflect the theological problems that worried the Byzantine Empire in the last period of its existence (divine essence and energies, acquisition of the Holy Spirit and unity with God, uncreated grace), ascetic (methods of prayer, contemplative life, spiritual warfare) and monastic practice. Part of the works , included in this book, is included in the Greek “Philokalia”, but is not in the “Philokalia” of Bishop. Theophan the Recluse and is practically unknown to readers. The Russian translation of other works is published for the first time. The texts have been re-verified against the ancient Greek originals, edited and annotated. The hitherto unpublished “Tradition” of St. Philotheus Kokkin translated from an ancient Russian manuscript. The book is addressed to all those interested in the Orthodox tradition, as well as specialists (patrologists, Byzantine scholars, historians, ancient Russian scholars) and students of theological institutes and seminaries.© Comp., trans. from ancient Greek, edition of translations, preface. and notes: A.G.
