Who died at a very young age and left a legacy that was all contained in just one small volume, Wolfgang Borchert, however, gained posthumous fame and with his work had a significant influence on the development of German literature in the post-war years. He was destined to become a pioneer and founder of a whole movement in West German literature, the spiritual teacher of that generation of writers, which is usually called in Germany the “generation of returnees.”
