The work of the 11th century Byzantine writer Michael Psellos “Chronograph” is a work of talent and is completely different from traditional medieval historiography. It tells about dramatic events, which the writer himself witnessed in most cases, and also contains detailed stories about the activities and character of Psellus himself - a high-ranking official at the imperial court, teacher, prominent scientist and philosopher. It is no coincidence that some scientists consider “Chronography” to be a monument of memoir rather than historical literature. “A Brief History” is a work of a completely different genre. This is most likely a textbook on world history, written by Psellus for his royal student Michael VII. This essay was found and published quite recently. It differs from other Byzantine chronicles primarily in the completeness of the episodes and the subjective attitude of the author to the events described.
