The new book by the German-Swiss writer Christian Kracht (b. 1966) “Eurotrash” is formally a continuation of his debut novel “Faserland” (1995). The setting is modern Switzerland, through which the main character travels again, again and again encountering various manifestations of his beloved and hated German culture. Now he is not alone - he is accompanied by his elderly mother, either crazy from old age, alcohol and pills, or enlightened and seeing more than ordinary people. While exploring modernity, Kracht also experiments with genre. “Eurotrash” is a kind of auto-fiction, full of real details from the author’s life, sometimes shocking, and no less radical elements of fiction. The novel was shortlisted for the German and Swiss Book Awards.
