This publication is a translation of the chronicle of the Kurdish poetess and historian of the first half of the 19th century. Mah Sharaf Khanum Kurdistani, better known by her literary pseudonym Masture (Persian, “hidden”, “chaste”). The book is written in Persian and is called Ta'rikh-i Ardalan - "The History of Ardelan." The work is dedicated to the history of the relatively small but extremely interesting region of Eastern Kurdistan and the dynasty of Kurdish emirs that ruled there. Kurdistan, divided at the beginning of the 16th century between Ottoman Turkey and Safavid Iran, remained under the rule of these countries until the end of the 19th century. However, a significant part of the Kurdish regions actually enjoyed independence, recognizing either the Shah or the Sultan's power, and at times not recognizing either one or the other even nominally. Iranian-Turkish rivalry in Kurdistan and regularly recurring attempts to establish real power over the Kurds in the 19th century became particularly acute, which led to the growth of national self-awareness. The centers of ethnic consolidation were the emirates of Ardelan, Baban, Ruwanduz, Hakkari, Bakhdinan, Bokhtan, and a number of major uprisings broke out there. In Kurdistan, by this time, developed European powers had joined the political and economic rivalry in addition to Turkey and Iran. Through the common efforts of the interested parties, the uprisings were crushed, and by the first decade of the second half of the 19th century. Kurdish emirates ceased to exist.
