A hundred years ago, M. Bezhanov published the essay “Vartashen Jews,” which contained a very detailed description of the mountain Jews of the village of Vartashen (now in the Republic of Azerbaijan). “Tales, legends and fairy tales” translated into Russian were attached to the essay. In his translation, M. Bezhanov tried to preserve the style of presentation of the narrator, from whose words these tales were recorded, and the manner of presentation of Mountain Jewish fairy tales in general. Sometimes he literally translates expressions, which in translation lose their shine and sharpness, so characteristic of popular expressions. It must be admitted that, nevertheless, M. Bezhanov managed to preserve the originality and flavor of the Mountain-Jewish legends, but in general the translation turned out to be very far from perfect, which prompted me to engage in literary processing of these legends. Only the best of them were selected. Those who are interested in the publication of M. Bezhanov himself can familiarize themselves with it in the “Collection of materials for describing the localities and tribes of the Caucasus” (Tiflis, 1892, issue 18). Attached to this publication is a short historical essay about the Mountain Jews, which includes excursions to history of all branches of the Jewish people.I. Semenov
