Where it all began. The year is 2049, Washington, DC. Paul Thurman, a senator, invites young congressman Donald Keeney, an architect by training, to participate in a special project called KLU (Containment and Recycling Complex). The essence of the project is the creation of an underground storage facility for nuclear and toxic waste, and Donald is tasked with designing a shelter bunker for the facility's maintenance personnel. The year is 2052, Fulton County, Georgia. The project is completed. And as if as a culmination to its completion, America is covered by a series of nuclear strikes. Thurman, Donald and other selected representatives of American society move to an equipped shelter. It is then that Kini reveals a harsh and terrible truth: KLU was just a curtain for the worldwide Operation Fifty, the goal of which is to save part of humanity in the event of a nuclear disaster. And the number 50 means the number of shelters erected, controlled from the command center of shelter No. 1. How did all this continue? Year 2212 and onwards, up to 2345 inclusive. The shelters, one after another, are leaving the subordination of the main one. Rebellion follows rebellion, each brutally suppressed by remote activation of poisonous gas. How will it all end? Unknown. In May 2023, the first season of the television series Shelter, based on Howie's novel, premiered (directed by Adam Bernstein and Morten Tyldum from a script by Graham Yost). The series was extremely popular, received high ratings and has already been renewed for the second and third seasons. Previously, the book was published under the title “Bunker. Change.”
