The action of the story covers the decline of the Soviet era and subsequent critical years. A graduate of the artillery school, Gennady Faloleev, is sent to undergo military service in one of the Trans-Baikal units, where he falls under the command of an experienced and worthy battery commander - Captain Grigoriev. The officers quickly find a common language - they share their sorrows and joys, both personal and official; They set their life goals and try to realize them...
