Maria Yalovich (1922–1998), the daughter of a Jewish lawyer, managed to survive under National Socialism by hiding from the authorities in Berlin. After liberation in 1945, she remained in the city and became a professor of ancient literature and cultural studies at the University. Humboldt. Her son Herman Simon, founder and long-term leader of the New Synagogue - Centrum Judaicum foundation, begged his mother, shortly before her death, to dictate the story of her salvation on tape.
