“Scenes from the Private and Public Life of Animals” (1842) is a famous collection for which the texts were written by famous French writers, and the illustrations were done by the wonderful draftsman Granville. The cross-cutting plot of the book is the story of how the animals gathered at their General Assembly and decided to free themselves from human power, and to do this, each told their own story. The reader can expect monologues from the conformist Hare and the Byronist Bear, the epicurean Crocodile and the Poodle, who became a theater critic, the English Cat, convicted of adultery, and the French Cat, deceived by the traitorous Cat. The names and some signs of the characters are animal, and the problems, of course, are human, the same ones that faced the French of the first half of the 19th century in their everyday life. This produces a comic effect, which is completed by Granville’s brilliant drawings. The collection was translated by the famous Russian researcher of French culture, Vera Milchina, author of the book “Paris in 1814–1848: Everyday Life.”
