“Military equipment is often beautiful, attractive and original. Submarines, fighter jets, missiles and even tanks can be mesmerizing in their power, sometimes seen in World War II posters with “clouds of bombers” in the sky or in photographs of horrendous Cold War nuclear tests with palm trees bent like reeds in the foreground. In modern advertisements for drones and jet fighters, the sparkling curves of metal evoke an almost sexual feeling, making one believe in the seriousness of the concept of “technoporn”. Many incarnations of military technologies look truly amazing and attract us with their thoughtfulness, contours, and amazing capabilities. They are interesting to look at, they attract the eye and even delight. At some point, I myself became a little obsessed with tanks - I began to visit the Artillery and Technical Museum when it was still located at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, and took my students there on excursions, which were conducted by the unforgettable Dr. William Atwater (he is already retired, but still actively gives lectures and is engaged in scientific work). Atwater knew a lot about guns. He showed us old tanks from all over the world—Russian, British, Japanese—and talked about their features and weaknesses, and how they had changed over time. I learned that the first Russian tanks were driven by women [1] because they were too cramped for men, and I wanted to try it too. My students gave me toy tanks, probably intended for boys and certainly not for an adult female scientist with feminist and pacifist views (Figure 1). But there really is something alluring about tanks—bulky, clunky, and, frankly, not at all safe—to use. It seems that in a tank you can move through life without risk. Like other military technologies, they seem to promise reliability, power and protection in an insecure world...”
