After his death, he did not leave a penny; even his funeral was paid for by sponsors. Diaghilev called himself a “European-style philanthropist” who opened a “cultural window to Europe” for Russia. It was he who introduced the world to the global, enduring value of Russian culture. Sergei Diaghilev can rightfully be considered the founder of domestic show business.
