Peter Arkadyevich Stolypin is one of the most striking and tragic figures in Russian political history. We offer the reader a book consisting of memoirs of both Stolypin’s enthusiastic admirers and associates - A. I. Guchkov, S. E. Kryzhanovsky, A. P. Izvolsky and others, as well as his irreconcilable opponents - S. Yu. Witte, P. N. Milyukov, gives an idea not only of the prime minister and reformer himself, but also of the fatal era of the Russian Troubles of 1905–1907 for Russia, when the empire was on the brink of destruction and Stolypin was called upon to save it. The history of Stolypin’s relationship with the first Russian parliament (State Duma) and society - this is the drama of a decisive reformer who gained power in a situation of severe crisis. And this is the special relevance of the book. The volume of memoirs reads like a historical novel with a fast-paced, intense plot, expressive characters, and a clash of ideas and human passions. Many memoirs are taken both from archives and from publications difficult to access for the general reader. The compiler of this publication, as well as the author of an extensive preface and detailed comments, is the historian and journalist I. L. Arkhipov, who has written many works on the problems of socio-political history Russia at the end of the 19th – first third of the 20th centuries.
