Dedicated with gratitude and reverence to Teacher K.H. LORD BUDDHA SAID that we should not believe in anything said just because it was said so; should not believe traditions just because they have been handed down from ancient times; nor rumors, as such; nor the writings of the sages for the sole reason that they were written by the sages; nor fantasies which we suppose to be inspired by Deva (that is, seem to us to be a spiritual revelation); nor the conclusions we have drawn from some chance conjectures; nor in that which is determined by apparent necessity by analogy; nor in that which is based only on the authority of our mentors or teachers. But we must believe a scripture, a doctrine, or a statement if our own reason, our own consciousness, confirms it. “Therefore,” He says in conclusion, “I taught you to believe not what you simply heard, but what is confirmed by your consciousness, so that you could then act accordingly and beyond that.” (The Secret Doctrine, vol. 3, p. 401). )
