Thor Heyerdahl (1914–2002), Norwegian ethnographer and archaeologist. He “took over his passion for geographical research from his great compatriots, Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen.” He made his first trips (to the Marquesas Islands and British Columbia) in his youth. He took part in World War II - he served as a radio operator in a sabotage detachment. In 1947, the world watched with bated breath as a group of enthusiasts rode the Kon-Tiki raft across the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Then there were the voyages of the papyrus boat "Ra" across the Atlantic, and the reed boat "Tigris" along the Persian Gulf, Arabian and Red Seas. And also travel to the Maldives, Easter Island, an archaeological expedition to Peru... Thor Heyerdahl wrote several books about his expeditions that became widely known throughout the world, including in our country.
