In this book M.-L. von Franz, using his own experience as an analyst and his experience of collaborating with Jung, reveals many important aspects of psychological knowledge and experience accumulated in fairy tales around the world. She does this very wisely, using her excellent knowledge of folklore. Basically, the author discusses problems associated with the Shadow side of human life: how the Shadow archetype can manifest itself in men and women, what fairy tales say about behavior and conscious attitudes that contribute to the emergence of evil. Various ways of embodying evil in fairy tales are considered, in particular: in the images of giants and monsters, evil spirits and demons, treacherous kings and cunning witches. M.-L. von Franz considers every style of behavior paradoxical: sometimes it is a fight against evil, sometimes it is the use of cunning, sometimes it is a manifestation of strength or magic, and sometimes it is an escape or retreat. In addition, the author shows how important it is to be able to find support in the core of one’s own essence, that is, in the Self, transcendental to good and evil. The book may be of interest not only to psychologists, but also to a wide range of readers.
