The dates of birth of the poems that make up this book clearly indicate: thoughts about childhood and adolescence, the desire to resurrect his “initial time” and discover in it a spiritual meaning common to all never left David Samoilov (1920–1990). One of the greatest Russian poets of the 20th century remained faithful to this theme throughout his life - both happy and tragic, which occupied a very special place in his world. Understanding this made it possible to do what was only secretly planned by the poet himself - to collect Samoilov’s lyrics, which came “from childhood,” under one cover. The title of the book not only formally repeats the name of the indisputable poetic masterpiece, but also preserves its meaning. The poem “From Childhood” speaks equally about the fact that the time of our discovery of life, our own “I”, poetry always remains with us, and about its finitude. The preposition “from” means both belonging to childhood and going beyond its limits. Samoilov's poems can help us preserve the aching, vital feeling of the closest connection between fathers and children (A. Nemzer).
