Charles De Coster (1827–1879) was a Belgian writer who advocated the right of the Flemish people to self-government. “A people dies if it does not know its past,” he argued and recreated such a heroic past in the epic book “The Legend of Till Eulenspiegel.” After the death of the writer, this book was recognized as the “national Bible”, and the author himself was recognized as the founder of Franco-Belgian literature. In Flanders, a son, Till Eulenspiegel, was born into the family of the coal miner Klaas. He came to a world where terrible wars rumble, religious intolerance reigns, and in the squares one after another fires are lit and people serve as fuel for them. But is it possible to defeat the human spirit with greed and cruelty? So Till Eulenspiegel - a merry fellow, a mischief-maker and a minstrel - will prove too tough for kings, churchmen, informers and simply petty villains. This is a book about the human spirit - Tila, the people's soul - Nele, loyalty and kindness - Lamm, which cannot be broken by terrible trials, about the eternal triumph of life and love.
