Old Russian church life developed special printed lists of sins, known as “general confessions”, or, as they were called in church vernacular, “renewals”. One of these most ancient “renovations” known to us belongs to St. Demetrius of Rostov. In many monasteries, where there was a custom of frequent repentance, with a small number of spiritual fathers of the numerous monastic brethren, as well as many daily arriving pilgrims, “renewals” were widespread; to this day, this practice has been preserved on Athos. This book provides a similar list of sins, compiled on the basis of this kind of ancient “renovations”, translated into modern Russian. This list does not include such sins that the repentant, if he knows them, must confess in personal confession to his confessor.
