Evgeniy Sergeevich Gessen (January 23, 1910, St. Petersburg - 1942?) - poet of the “first wave” of Russian emigration. Member of the Prague literary association "Skeet". Mainly published in emigrant periodicals. I never published a collection of poems. He died of illness in one of the Nazi concentration camps. V. Khodasevich wrote about the “Skeet” almanacs: “...Now the most promising poets of the “Skeet”, besides Golovina, seem to us to be E. Chegrintseva, Evgeniy Gessen, Tatyana Ratgauz.” As said in in one of the poems by Hesse himself, for him “writing poetry” means “thinking in poetry” and thinking not about lofty topics, but about the most everyday things: “about what is gloomy in the room, what is noisy in a foreign city,” etc. ... Even such a habitually “high” topic as love is revealed in his poems in an extremely everyday manner. Not too rich in the novelty of rhymes and images, Gessen’s poems, meanwhile, sound like a deep poetic confession, almost always hopelessly tragic, filled not with declarative, but with genuine human sadness. The basis of this collection of poems: the collection “Poets of the Prague Skete”. Rostock. 2005. pp. 460-484.
