Sofia Volgina has been interested in Russian history since childhood. Having written a novel about the deportation of Russian Greeks, covering the history of a half-century period of their life, she did not think that she would ever write about even more. The theme of Russia, its spiritual development, the rise of the Russian spirit, the development of the economy, culture, international position, love and devotion to the Motherland, the sense of pride of belonging to one’s people and many other aspects of the country’s history have always been not indifferent to her. A Greek herself, she wanted to show how the German princess of Anhalt-Zerbst, who by the will of fate found herself on the Russian throne, became Russian in spirit and considered the Russian people the best in the whole world. The author of the book wanted to show as broadly as possible her life and work, the psychology of relationships with her favorites and surrounding nobles, diplomats, military leaders and ordinary people, covering the period of her entire thirty-four-year rule of Russia. Catherine the Second was a Great Empress for the Russian people. She managed to leave for the future of Russia educated people of a new formation, for whom the honor and glory of the Fatherland came first. How the author managed to illuminate the age of Catherine is for the readers to judge.
