The book shares only common plot and characters with the historical narrative by I. A. Goncharov “The Frigate “Pallada”. The author retraced the 1853 Pallas route again in 1967 and filled out the contents of the Tsar’s secretary’s report with newly discovered real circumstances and documents. The censorship of the autocracy simply kept silent about the mentioned facts. This is, first of all, a convict attitude towards the lower ranks, incredible conditions of detention and living conditions for the team. The officers lived in separate comfortable cabins. The crew was kept in bestial conditions: the hold was filled with pigs and other living creatures that served as food during the campaign. There was no ventilation, there were no living quarters for the sailors: they slept on the cannon deck in hammocks, weather permitting. The lathing in front of the stem (bow) of the ship served as a toilet (latrine, knyavdiged). About five thousand sailors are forced to use this “convenience” around the clock: less than three minutes per “person.” The user was often washed overboard by the wave. They didn't always save us. They suffered from dysentery and peptic ulcers. Funeral services were held for those who died and crashed when falling from the masts, and were buried in the ocean. The crew of the “Pallada” endured all the vicissitudes with honor, having fulfilled the diplomatic mission of strengthening Russia’s policy in the Far East. The language of the book is quite lively and understandable to both sailors and all romantics of the sea. Feel the smell of ocean “romance” on a Russian sailing ship of the 19th century!
