The novel takes place in the near future of the Russian state. Poverty and complete stagnation lead to hunger, local conflicts and widespread banditry. To reduce protest sentiments, once a year a grand show called “Race of Heroes” is held. During the course of the show, twenty of the most dangerous and violent criminals go through several stages in the hope of saving their lives and gaining freedom. During all three days, professional “hunters” will hunt for them, and any citizen has the right to deal with any of the participants himself, receiving a substantial reward. The heroes will have to endure difficult trials in the hope of winning the show and staying alive, but that’s not all. Their goal is to change the life of an entire state.
