During his lifetime, Marcel Proust (1871-1922) was not widely known, despite the prestigious Prix Goncourt, awarded to him in 1919 for the novel “Under the Canopy of Girls in Bloom,” and the Order of the Legion of Honor (1920). He was recognized as a great writer only after his death, and since then the life, personality and work of M. Proust began to be studied, surrounding his name with legends and myths. He was seen as a regular at high-society salons, one of the last dandies of the “Belle Epoque” - and a recluse, a seriously ill man, in a tightly closed office, working with the last of his strength on the book “In Search of Lost Time.” Much has been written about Proust: articles, studies, memoirs ... And each author, in his own way, tried to unravel the mystery contained in this man, to understand and explain the bewitching appeal of what he wrote. He is seen as a philosopher, a subtle psychologist and an unsurpassed stylist. In his book about Proust, Claude Mauriac abundantly quotes his correspondence and texts, allowing the reader to hear for himself the noise of Proust’s “lost time.”
