The founder of the Western monastic order of the Benedictines, Venerable Benedict, was born in the Italian city of Nursia in 480. At the age of 14, his parents sent him to study in Rome. However, subsequently the young man decided to devote himself to God. Having settled on Mount Cassino, Benedict established the Monte Cassino monastery, which for a long time was the center of theological education in Western Europe. In this monastery the monk wrote a charter based on the experience of life of the eastern hermits. He attributed to the monks the absolute renunciation of property, as well as the rewriting of ancient manuscripts. A large library was created at the monastery. Subsequently, the Rule of Benedict was adopted by many Western monasteries and went through more than 100 editions until 1595.
